I CANNOT tell you guys how many times I’ve realized how dehydrated I was!
It’s like I’m so busy getting through my day that I forget to take care of myself sometimes?
That can’t just be a me thing, right?
I’ve found that drinking lots & lots of plain water ( no sugars, additives, or anything – okay, maybe a handful of berries & a couple slices of lemon when I’m feeling EXTRA extra ) is the BEST thing that we can do for our bodies. It’s honestly the most important beauty tip, EVER. ( right next to getting enough sleep, but we’ll get to that some other time )
As in, if I could use this platform to just pass on one, singular beauty tip … it would be to chug down that H2O – whenever you freakin’ can.
The thing is, there are SO many more benefits beyond just human survival to drinking ENOUGH water.
Water is simply magical – it really improves your body inside & out in so many different ways :
+ Water is nature’s own beauty cream.
A huge concern most people have had at least once in their lives ( let’s be realll though, yeah? ) is skin-care.
No one wants dry, flaky, acne-ridden skin … & you can try all you want to slather on those lotions & potions & other skin-care holy grails, but your skincare regimen really won’t be doing you any favors if you’re not staying hydrated.
I know this because I grew up in a household where water was KING – my mom hardly purchased actual bevvies & we always had a filled-up Brita pitcher on stand-by.
My mom has also never had a single pimple – coincidence? I think NOT.
Drinking lots & lots of water will help keep your skin looking fineee ALL THE TIME. Say buh-bye to stubborn dark circles, under-eye bags, & redness.
Of course there are other causes involved when it comes to skin condition ( traveling, underlying conditions, weather, air, etc. ) but the first thing you absolutely have to ask yourself when you get frustrated at your own skin is : are you really drinking enough water?
+ Water revs up metabolisms & helps you feel full.
H2O is such a miracle worker when it comes to weight-loss, & it doesn’t even involve BS ingredients or sneaky I-want-your-money marketing tactics that run rampant when it comes to most pills or diets.
Why? It’s simple : sometimes when your body tells you that you’re hungry, there’s a HUGE chance you’re actually just thirsty.
The reality of it is that the more water you drink, the faster foods like breads and grains expand, making you feel full. If you recall the last time you snacked on some major carbs, the fullness kinda hits you like a truck – all at once with no warning, as you’re biting into your next slice of pizza with much regret.
+ Water is an all-natural energy drink.
Not drinking enough water leads to dehydration, which can make us feel dizzy, nauseated, or just plain tired. Instead of grabbing a Red bull or some Starbucks for that pick-me-up, skip the calories & your hard-earned cash & just grab some water. It’s easy, it’s cheap, & IT WORKS.
Whenever I find myself struggling to keep my eyes open, I make sure to get a few gulps of water down. Especially if the room I’m trying to stay awake in isn’t super ventilated ( hello, stuffy classrooms ), I get super dry & tired. Drinking water is key – trust me.

+ Water & fitness go hand-in-hand.
A dehydrated body means that your muscle cells won’t be able to maintain the balance of fluid, which ALSO means you’ll have lower muscle performance. It’s important to always hydrate BEFORE, DURING, & AFTER a workout in order to help your body along with its natural processes.
Muscle fatigue is a real thing & it’s definitely not fun!
+ Water keeps your body clean.
I like to keep things real & out in the open – SO let’s talk about it. Hopefully you’re not eating anything right now because we’re going to get into the nitty gritty … of pee & poop.
Loading up on water helps your kidneys, which is a key player when it comes to detoxifying your bod. Not drinking enough water means that there will be too much blood urea nitrogen trapped inside ( yuck! ) … which also means there’s a higher risk of getting kidney stones. Not peeing often enough or when you need to can also increase the risk of UTIs, which is literally such a pain – I DON’T RECOMMEND.
Even constipation comes into play.

What is the appropriate amount of water to drink?
Now, after all this, you might be freaking out … or you might be a glowing QUEEN that already drinks water who might simply just be wondering : HOW MUCH water is enough?
You’ve probably heard about the 8 glasses / day thing, or whatever other adages are thrown around to make sure you’re drinking water.
I’ve actually experimented with this a bit to decide how many ounces were the perfect amount – not too little, not too much, y’know? BALANCE. Drinking too much water is actually not a good thing either – hyponatremia is a real thing.
My personal rule of thumb is that I always try to drink two-thirds of my body weight, in ounces. This means that I take my body weight ( in lbs ) & multiply it by 2/3, or 0.67, for that PERFECT number.
Some days I may drink more depending on my activity level, sodium intake, or if it’s literally 100°F outside – & no, I’ve never had hyponatremia, so you’re likely going to be okay, too!
Some extra tips to keep ya hydrated :
+ Drink water whenever you’re going to eat ANYTHING. You’ll generally eat less & also balance out your sodium intake.
+ Eat more fruits & veggies! They tend to be super high in water content, so they’ll keep things interesting in case you get bored of chugging water. I love a good vine tomato, some cucumbers, or watermelon.
+ Invest in a GOOD water bottle & stick with it … a water bottle you wouldn’t mind carrying around everywhere that you can use over & over again. Single-use plastic is OUT! Having a set water bottle as your main b*tch can really help you keep track of how much you’re drinking. I LOVE a bkr bottle for the major chic factor, a Brita filtering water bottle for when I don’t have access to a hydration station of some sort, or a S’well bottle to keep things HOT hot or ICY cold – I might have a problem, HA!
