The tomato. Such a controversial food, no?

I mean, really – IS IT a fruit? Or is it a vegetable?

My theory? It’s totally a fruit – I definitely eat it like one!

I’m talking : light breakfasts, juicy snacks, or a lil’ sweetness in my salad – YES.

Of course, I adore all fruits ( seriously, fruit is SO good – taste-wise & health-wise! ). But, tomatoes are probably one of the healthiest fruit choices out there.

First off, tomatoes are clearly not as sugary as apples or bananas … Seriously, 1 tomato only has 22 calories. You’d prob be burning more calories from slicing & eating the tomato! Or even just taking a huge bite out of it & trying not to make a mess ( been there, done that ). Negative calorie foods are the SH*T.

But, they also have so much more to offer …

Tomatoes are full of TONS of natural vitamins & minerals : vitamins A, K, B1-B7, C, iron, potassium, magnesium, chromium, phosphorus, choline, folate, & zinc.

& since they’re so rich in vitamin K, they will help strengthen your hair, give it some shine, & speed up the growth / revitalization process. Plus, they’re super good for skin – they fight acne & prevent damage to your skin cells.

Amazingly enough, they also reduce heart disease, stop blood clots, prevent stroke, & reduce cancer risks – all thanks to nutrients like lycopene.

Tomatoes also reduce stress & tension, protect your eyesight, & keep your bones healthy.

& for those surrounded by second-hand smoke : THEY HELP REDUCE THE DAMAGE FROM SMOKING ( basically a shield against carcinogens ).

Thank GOD for that.

So, are you onboard yet?

If not, here are some reasons why tomatoes are the PERFECT skinny food :

+ improves digestion ( bye, constipation!!! )
+ speeds up the fat-burning process
+ helps restore biochemical balance if you’re diabetic
+ acts as a great on-the-go snack – juicy, sweet, & super filling
+ consists of 95% water & 5% fiber / carbs – perfect for staying hydrated
+ sexes up your food by enhancing the flavors & keeping things refreshing ( yummm, Italian food )

Basically, tomatoes are pretty damn SWEET.

If you’re hanging out w/ me on Snapchat, you’d remember I literally had some vine tomatoes for breakfast – so perfect if you want something quick + light to start off your day.

Do you love tomatoes or hate them with a passion? Did I change your mind? ALSO, are they fruits or vegetables?!?! Let me know – I’ll be keeping score. 😉

Yours truly,

I eat tomatoes as fruit too! I can’t stand them cooked though, only raw in salads or something, lol.

Hi Asby! I prefer them raw most of the time but I love them roasted with some mozz & baguette! I also scramble them with eggs – it’s a dish I’ve been eating since I was a kid & SO GOOD. Thanks for reading!

      Hi Stella,

Thanks for stopping by & for the support! I don’t actually read a ton of other blogs since I like to keep my perspective fresh without outside influences, but I am a fan of The Skinny Confidential & The Nutrition Addiction. I also read a lot of books on nutrition and wellness, which you can find at any library! Hope this helps!
